Supercar company founder faces criminal charges for using his own name for brand - Driving

Porsche tuning company Gemballa is pressing criminal charges for trademark infringement and fraud against the son of its founder for using his full name to brand his new supercar startup, which will also modify Porsches.

Marc Philipp Gemballa planned to launch his new brand, also called Marc Philipp Gemballa, at the Geneva auto show before its cancellation, reports Motor Authority, but now may see some obstacles in the form of a lawsuit and criminal charges leveraged by Gemballa, the company his late father, Uwe Gemballa, started in 1981.

Uwe was murdered in 2010, and though his tuning company was shuttered for a little while, it’s recently re-opened and resumed operations.

Gemballa was a tuning company dedicated specifically to Porsches, creating some of the wildest styling kits for 911s through the ’80s. Famous for fitting huge Ferrari Testarossa-inspired side vents and large, sculpted rear wings, Gemballa was a big player in the ’80s tuning game.

More recently, the brand has been putting its spin on Porsche’s more popular vehicles, such as the Cayenne and Panamera. And, nope, we don’t think they look very good at all.

Marc Phillip Gemballa’s debut vehicle will be Porsche-based, too, but will take the form of an off-road-ready supercar, akin to the old Porsche 959 Dakar. A teaser image shows a very familiar rear wing, as well as a full-width rear taillight.

Gemballa is pressing civil and criminal charges Mark Philipp for trademark infringement and fraud, and says Marc is “exploiting” the reputation of Gemballa by using the Gemballa name. A spokesperson for Marc Philipp did not offer comment.

To make things more confusing, Uwe’s Gemballa is also planning its own supercar launch in the near-future, meaning we could see two Gemballa supercars from two different companies with two distinctly different designs before too long.
