First production prototype Ferrari F50 supercar going up for sale - Driving

Vintage car company Worldwide Auctioneers is putting up a highly covetable Ferrari for auction this month — the first production prototype of the Ferrari F50 supercar, and the last Ferrari with a five-digit serial number, will go under the hammer next week.

Ferrari fitted the F50 with a 4.7-litre V12 making 520 horsepower and 347 lb.-ft. of torque.

That’s enough to bring the Italian supercar up to a max speed of 202 mph (325 km/h), and move it from zero to 100 km/h in just 3.7 seconds.

The car was first unveiled back in 1995 in Geneva, and as the production prototype, was drive-tested by a handful of pro racers including famed Ferrari race driver Dario Benuzzi and Formula 1 drivers Niki Lauda, Jean Alesi and Gerhard Berger before being loaned out to automotive journalists.

After that, Ferrari completely rebuilt the car in its factory and sold it to a pal of Enzo Ferrari’s. It changed hands multiple times since then, but hasn’t been driven much.

Today, as it heads for auction in Arizona, the car shows just 1,400 miles (2,253 km) on the odometer and comes with a bunch of original swag including factory luggage, the hardtop cover, a serial-numbered key fob, a digital file with a bunch of detailed info, parts books and more.

Top-of-the-line F50s such as this have fetched more than US$3.35 million in the past, but we won’t surprise if this one tops the US$4-million mark. Time to crack open the piggy bank.

Worldwide will auction the precious Ferrari on January 15 at the Arizona Auction Week in south Scottsdale.
